After living in their mid-century house in Minnesota for several years, a small family decided it was time to refurbish some of the spaces\u00a0to\u00a0bring\u00a0in\u00a0more positivity through the infusion of color. They reached out to Lidia\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia, founder\u00a0and\u00a0CEO of Minneapolis-based Moonstone Design + Build<\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0to complete the project, which included a renovation of the kitchen and a bathroom, as well as updates to the entrance and living room fireplace.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Citing the Midwest\u00a0<\/span>winter sunsets of burnt peach with hints of plum, the clients knew\u00a0<\/span>they wanted to walk into their house and feel happy\u00a0\u2013\u00a0especially when the outside world was white and frozen.\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>\u00a0was excited by the opportunity to design something other than \u201canother white kitchen.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cColor is life,\u201d said the designer. \u201cThis client set us up for figuring out our niche \u2013\u00a0thinking outside the box, making a space\u00a0pop\u00a0and not just creating a \u2018safe\u2019 kitchen.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Sweet\u00a0Kitchen\u00a0Palette\u00a0<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In addition to lacking\u00a0brightness\u00a0with its\u00a0tired\u00a0wood cabinets and dark countertops, the original closed-off kitchen was void of function with badly\u00a0placed\u00a0appliances and wasted space.\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>\u00a0changed all that by slightly opening the wall between the kitchen and dining room and rethinking the cabinet layout.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Colorful<\/p>\n

She used a mix of warm and cool tones \u2013 spun sugar upper cabinets and a light green backsplash \u2013 to provide the inviting colors the clients craved. Lower cabinets and tall\u00a0units in walnut with a\u00a0natural pattern balance the lighter hues, while the gray terrazzo floor anchors the space even as it offers flecks of pink as a nod to the upper cabinets.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe darker color on the floor makes everything fall into place,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>. \u201cWhen you are doing a kitchen with a lot of color, you have to include elements that ground it, so it\u2019s not overdone.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Riding the Bathroom Wave<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

To recreate the bathroom, which serves the daughter and guests,\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>\u00a0took a bit of space from the adjacent bedroom and incorporated another feel-good palette. With the\u00a0additional\u00a0square footage, she was able to replace a pedestal sink with a larger vanity that\u00a0offers storage and counterspace. Its walnut surface ties it to the kitchen and brings warmth to the bathroom, which\u00a0allowed\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>\u00a0to choose cooler colors for the walls.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Colorful<\/p>\n

Here, a wave of scalloped tile in a mix of blues and greens brings a sense of calm to\u00a0the space. The clients liked the tile, but it was expensive, so the wave design offered a way to\u00a0incorporate it\u00a0without covering an entire wall.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a girl\u2019s bathroom, but we didn\u2019t want it to feel like a child\u2019s bathroom,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>. \u201cInstead, it is playful but also elevated and timeless. It will still work for her in 10 years.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the walls are painted in a light blue color to coordinate with the wall tile,\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>\u00a0chose white subway tile for the bathtub walls. This offered another\u00a0cost savings and created a clean look in the bathtub area while letting the scalloped tile be the star of the show.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cement floor tile, which the client found, adds a different aspect to the room with its gray-and-white geometric pattern.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cThe floor was a bold choice,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>.\u00a0\u201cThat one made me nervous.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To convince herself, she drew it out on paper to understand how it would look in the space,\u00a0then agreed it did not compete with the scalloped wave wall.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Colorful<\/p>\n

This project provided\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>\u00a0with a crucial experience thanks to\u00a0the homeowners\u2019\u00a0penchant for atypical color. Now, potential clients who contact the\u00a0design\/build firm\u00a0specifically mention\u00a0it\u00a0and\u00a0cite their\u00a0desire to add more color to their homes. To make it a \u201csafe\u201d experience,\u00a0<\/span>Valdivia<\/span>\u00a0provides renderings.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to play with different palette options,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you wonder whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0too much, create renderings. Have fun with it. You can see what clicks.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
