When\u00a0a Chicago couple needed a kitchen and multiple bathroom renovations in\u00a0their newly bought home, they turned to Melissa Lewis\u00a0of\u00a0Melissa Lewis Interiors. She had worked with them\u00a0when they built their former house\u00a0as a transition from the city to the suburbs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLuckily for us, with longevity comes an innate sense of trust, and that enabled us to pitch and subsequently execute these big ideas with ease and a whole lot of fun,\u201d said Lewis, who took her clients on a visit to the\u00a0O\u2019Brien Harris\u00a0Cabinetry showroom, and they knew that was also a great fit\u00a0for the project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main goals for the new kitchen were to\u00a0make it more functional for their large family and open it up to the rest of the\u00a0home.\u00a0They also wanted a\u00a0kitchen that would accommodate\u00a0frequent\u00a0entertaining.\u00a0For the baths, the\u00a0dated\u00a0primary\u00a0and boys\u2019 and girls\u2019 spaces\u00a0needed\u00a0major facelifts and\u00a0more personalized storage solutions\u00a0for a bespoke experience for each family member.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Place for Day-to-Day & Special Events<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

To make the kitchen more spacious and inviting for family and guests,\u00a0Lewis removed a wall between it and the breakfast area. She also\u00a0framed out\u00a0an arched opening\u00a0between the two spaces to achieve symmetry, an important\u00a0detail of the\u00a0new design.\u00a0The color palette \u2013 walnut, warm white\u00a0paint\u00a0and\u00a0reeded\u00a0glass with dark antique details \u2013 was chosen for its\u00a0timelessness\u00a0and approachability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The surfaces add much color and contrast\u00a0to the space, especially the\u00a0Calacatta\u00a0Corchia\u00a0marble countertops\u00a0that extend as a backsplash on the sink and\u00a0range\u00a0walls.\u00a0The\u00a012-foot-long\u00a0island countertop is a honed granite\u00a0that features inverse cove detail,\u00a0making\u00a0appear as\u00a0if several picture frames are incorporated onto the surface.\u00a0The warm walnut flooring\u00a0was added to match that in the rest of the home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The homeowners wanted to keep the\u00a0La Cornue<\/a> statement range from the former kitchen, and Lewis added a second oven.\u00a0A\u00a0custom-paneled\u00a0full-height refrigerator\/freezer and refrigerator drawers\u00a0and\u00a0two paneled dishwashers\u00a0were also included, along with a hand-troweled\u00a0hood for the ventilation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Windy<\/p>\n

Lewis likes to mix metals in her projects, so she chose\u00a0a polished-nickel faucet with a filtration system and\u00a0soft-brass sconces. There is a statement pendant\u00a0with four white shades\u00a0over the large island, and\u00a0integrated lighting provides task illumination at the range.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Storage\u00a0Strategy<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The cabinetry in the home was custom built by O\u2019Brien Harris, and it was designed so that every item has a place with its ample tray, canister and spice pullouts; knife block; and drawers for utensils, pots and pans, Tupperware and water bottles. Lewis and Ann Stockard, senior design lead at O\u2019Brien Harris, come up with a storage game plan, complete a first pass of drawings and place Post-It Notes to detail where everything goes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The kitchen is\u00a0lower\u00a0cabinet\u00a0focused\u00a0to\u00a0preserve\u00a0the natural light coming in from the large window behind the sink.\u00a0The\u00a0Hyde Park\u00a0door style features a cove that mimics the scalloped detail\u00a0at the end of the galley island, which Lewis calls the space\u2019s signature detail.\u00a0The island also houses a microwave, trash\u00a0pullouts\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0extra oven.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The only upper cabinets in the kitchen are on either side of the sink wall, and they feature antique, reeded, mirrored-glass\u00a0doors\u00a0to add depth and elegance.\u00a0Lewis said\u00a0they were designed with architectural cues from the rest of the\u00a0home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cW<\/span>ith arched openings clad in walnut trim\u00a0used\u00a0throughout\u202fthe house,\u00a0these cabinets are a nod to the finishes and details you see repeating in the space in a variety\u202fof ways,\u201d she added.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Primary Perfect<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0goals for the homeowners\u2019 bathroom\u00a0were to invoke a refined, furniture-inspired style\u00a0and create a\u00a0calming, uncluttered space.\u00a0The\u00a0his-and-hers\u00a0walnut vanity\u00a0features an updated bamboo look with raised legs.\u00a0Hidden outlets in the drawers allow the discreet storage and use of\u00a0personal appliances.\u00a0The door and drawer\u00a0perimeters\u00a0incorporate a band of molding\u00a0to coordinate with the\u00a0bamboo-like legs, and the cabinet hardware and faucets match in a\u00a0brass\u00a0finish.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Windy<\/p>\n

The lighting plan\u00a0comprises\u00a0cans and\u00a0faceted\u00a0sconces\u00a0in an octagonal shape\u00a0on either side of the\u00a0vintage-style\u00a0mirrors. Medicine cabinets were not necessary because\u00a0tall cabinetry\u00a0on either side of the vanities\u00a0were\u00a0already part of the home\u2019s existing architecture.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The floor tile is a tumbled\u00a0Bardiglia\u00a0marble\u00a0in shades of navy and light blue that\u00a0complement\u00a0the walnut vanity.\u00a0The countertop\u00a0was fabricated from honed\u00a0Calacatta\u00a0Bluette slabs,\u00a0which Lewis says dovetails in with the natural stone floors and shower surround.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outfitting the Children\u2019s Baths<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The couple\u2019s two kids were also in need of\u00a0spaces\u00a0with more personalization to meet their individual needs.\u00a0A rich blue tone was chosen for the son\u2019s vanity, which includes an integrated\u00a0pull-out stepstool\u00a0so he can\u00a0access the mirror and the integrated stone shelf.\u00a0A drawer\u00a0toward\u00a0the\u00a0bottom\u00a0the unit provides\u00a0additional\u00a0storage. The\u00a0blue\/gray quartzite countertop features scalloped detail that is also\u00a0seen in other areas\u00a0of\u00a0the home, and the blue shade is also seen in the marble mosaic floor tile\u00a0Flush-mount\u00a0sconces in satin brass complement the cabinet hardware and the overhead light fixture.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Windy<\/p>\n

The girls\u2019 bathroom is shared by two sisters and was designed to be youthful,\u00a0fun\u00a0and feminine.\u00a0A double-sink vanity in forest green\u00a0features arched details that mimic those in the kitchen, and its dainty feet give the piece a furniture-like feel.\u00a0The walls are\u00a0comprised\u00a0of\u00a0half-height\u00a0ceramic\u00a0tile\u00a0and a peachy wallpaper with a floral motif.\u00a0Four sconces\u00a0with peach canopies\u00a0flank the two\u00a0woven\u00a0wicker mirrors, and a transom window\u00a0brings in\u00a0light from the hallway.\u00a0The Dolomite marble floor tile in a picket mosaic and polished-gold faucets round out the look in the girls\u2019 bath.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Windy<\/p>\n

Overcoming Project\u00a0Hurdles<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

According to Lewis, the team had an\u00a0extremely limited\u00a0window\u00a0of time\u00a0from when they could begin construction and\u00a0when the family\u00a0wanted to\u00a0move into the home.\u00a0This was even more challenging since they were renovating\u00a0both\u00a0the first and second floors\u00a0\u2013 all bathrooms and flooring and the kitchen. Tactical planning was necessary, as well as\u00a0long-standing relationships with team members\u00a0and\u00a0complete transparency with the clients.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a record-time construction project given how much there was to tackle,\u201d said Lewis. \u201cIt may have not felt like that\u00a0to the family, but it really was,\u00a0and they were total champs the whole time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
