When\u00a0Libby Drew Carver\u00a0first saw her future home\u00a0in a historic Pensacola, Fla.,\u00a0neighborhood, it was the worst house on the best block.\u00a0It was\u00a0also\u00a0down to the studs\u00a0thanks to flippers\u00a0who\u00a0had stopped mid-renovation. There was no sheetrock, and there were holes in the floor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The enormity of the project would have alienated most potential buyers, but for an experienced designer, the blank slate was a bonus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a sort of\u00a0kitchen design, but I was not in agreement with whatever had been planned,\u201d said\u00a0Carver,\u00a0lead designer at Pensacola-based\u00a0In Detail Interiors. \u201cI\u00a0didn\u2019t have to rip out anything, and I was able to customize every aspect of the house.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Without making structural changes,\u00a0Carver, aided by her father and now-husband, took on some of the work\u00a0herself, renovating the kitchen, two bathrooms and three bedrooms. About eight months\u00a0after buying the\u00a0home, she moved in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Personal Taste in the Kitchen<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The cottage-style house had only a small living room that opened to the kitchen and no space for a dining table. Carver chose to forgo the long island that had been planned in the kitchen in favor of a square island where seating allows diners to face each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Design<\/p>\n

Another constraint she faced was her budget, and she worked to keep material and installation costs low when possible. While the island features a pricey marble, the perimeter countertops are a leathered black granite that looks like soapstone but was less expensive. Carver laid the zellige-look backsplash tile herself.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing she wanted a dramatic range, she prioritized that and waited for sales to purchase other appliances. Above the range, a plaster hood was transformed by a faux finisher In Detail Interiors works with often.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Carver\u2019s\u00a0industry knowledge\u00a0helped\u00a0her\u00a0complete\u00a0the project, and because it was her own home, she enjoyed the freedom to design a space that was atypical of the white and blue kitchens indicative of the coastal area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t always get to do a moody look,\u201d she said. \u201cThe darker cabinets with darker countertops and\u00a0a\u00a0bold marble \u2013 those materials were something I wanted to try.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meant to Be<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In the guest bathroom, Carver again achieved a detailed, intentional look by leveraging her design expertise to enhance cost-effective product and material selections. To begin, she purchased the vanity at The Home Depot, but she changed the pulls, topped it with a basic Carrara marble countertop and had the fabricator add a shaped backsplash with scallops on the sides.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was not much more expensive, but the impact is significant,\u201d said\u00a0the designer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Design<\/p>\n

The shower features the same\u00a0zellige-look tile used in the kitchen in another color, offering a handmade feel with an interesting glaze. The floor tile\u00a0is one that had come up as\u00a0an option\u00a0on multiple projects but was never selected by a client, and\u00a0Carver\u00a0was excited to use it in her own home.\u00a0In fact, the style is such a perfect fit that she\u00a0was\u00a0asked whether it was original to the house more than once.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her Own Client\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Completing\u00a0a renovation of her own home gave\u00a0Carver\u00a0a new appreciation for what clients go through when they face decision overload.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a designer, you see so many things, and you get excited about so many things,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0hard to narrow it down.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0hard to commit when\u00a0there are so many ways you can go.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Design<\/p>\n

But her knowledge allowed her to balance her budget while executing a project that looks purposeful,\u00a0not inexpensive. She has since sold the house \u2013 she took the range with her \u2013 and was pleased that it sold fast despite, or perhaps because of, its dramatic kitchen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
