For design professionals, this means airflow no longer requires compromise. One often-overlooked component of bathroom ventilation is the exhaust fan cover. Traditionally, these covers were bulky plastic grilles that disrupted otherwise cohesive interiors. I’m here to tell you that you should never plan to do without a range hood! They should always be vented to the outside, unless it is absolutely impossible to do so. If this is the case, you absolutely must recycle air with a hood and open windows when cooking. Proper venting is an important part of home cooking and to your overall health.

That said, there is no reason why a range hood can’t add charm, elegance and reflect personal style. Here are just some of the custom looks you can create for a range hood.

Range Hoods Hidden in the Cabinetry

Just as you can panel your refrigerator and dishwasher behind cabinetry fronts to match your kitchen cabinets, you can also design a hood surround that blends seamlessly into the décor.

For small kitchens or those with minimalist designs, hiding the hood in cabinetry keeps things streamlined and cohesive. I have used this style trick many times in the apartment-sized kitchens here in New York City.

Why It’s Trending: Hiding the range hood makes the kitchen feel larger and less busy. Ideal for galley or compact kitchens. Offers a clean, uninterrupted cabinet line.

Plaster Range Hoods

This style brings a sense of warmth and organic elegance to the kitchen with its soft curves and subtle texture. Smooth on Venetian plaster for a refined look or go with a more tactile finish for a farmhouse or English Kitchen inspired design.

This will require that your contractor apply the plaster over the wood hoods on site. From experience, this process is best discussed during the contractor selection process. Utilizing wall or ceiling paint color makes for a seamless aesthetic. This allows for as much or as little personalization in the design of the range hood as you like and is truly a one-of-a-kind look.

Why It is Trending: Pairs beautifully with both traditional and modern aesthetics. Offers a sculptural focal point without being overpowering. Works well in neutral, nature-inspired palettes

Stone or Quartz Range Hoods

This is a real luxurious application as it provides the most seamless and modern look. Most design options continue the countertop material up the backsplash for a seamless wrap, and then onto the hood surround. It’s simply stunning, allowing for the material to really be the showstopper in your design.

Depending on budget, you can use quartz, Dekton or quartzite/marble. Any of these work beautifully and are without doubt the most maintenance free, easy to keep clean option once sealed properly.

There are weight considerations in the build-out phase, so this also needs to be planned from the get-go. But after that, your stone fabricator can create and install it. The impact is literally all you can wish for.
