Coverings 2026, North America’s largest and most significant international tile and stone exhibition and conference, was a destination for inspiration as nearly 60 Spanish manufacturers representing Tile of Spain exhibited at this year’s event. With a renewed focus on craftsmanship, materiality and design expression, the Spanish Pavilion continued to lead in ceramic innovation, blending centuries-old tradition with advanced manufacturing techniques.

At the forefront of this year’s introductions is a return to roots, with Spanish companies placing a strong emphasis on relief, surface articulation and refined aesthetics. These collections move beyond fleeting trends, offering architects and designers materials that tell a story through texture, depth and authenticity.

The following exemplify the key trends from Spain on display during this year’s exhibition.

Evolved Earth Palettes

Spanish manufacturers are redefining neutrals through a more nuanced, mineral-driven lens, moving beyond monotone palettes toward a chromatically enriched spectrum. Emerging collections look toward off-white foundations, infused with ochre, blush, olive and sand, alongside charcoals softened with red and brown undertones, creating a spectrum that feels both grounded and refined. The result is a cohesive, livable palette that reflects the Mediterranean landscape and supports a more authentic, enduring approach to design.

Artisanal Surface Expression

Across the Spanish ceramic sector, tile design is embracing the discerning beauty of craftsmanship, where tradition and technology converge. Hand-formed aesthetics, glaze pooling and heritage patina effects celebrate the intricacies of kiln-fired production while maintaining the precision and performance of modern manufacturing. Micro-relief textures and softly worn edges introduce a tactile dimension that extends beyond the visual, encouraging interaction and sensory engagement.

Refined Pattern Geometry

Pattern play is evolving toward a more restrained and sophisticated expression. Tone-on-tone geometries, subtle surface patterning and softened mineral veining introduce structure without overwhelming a space, allowing design to unfold through restrained contrast. Familiar layouts are being thoughtfully reinterpreted through stacked bond variations and mixed formats, adding quiet dynamism to traditional installations.

Reinterpreted Materiality

Spanish manufacturers continue to lead in reimagining traditional materials through a contemporary lens, blending familiarity with innovation. Terracotta is refined through expanded tonal ranges and improved technical performance, while brick is elongated and texturized to suit modern applications. Stone hybridization introduces layered compositions that merge multiple natural references, resulting in surfaces that feel more interpretive than literal.

Performance-Driven Design

Functionality remains intrinsic to the design language of Spanish ceramics, where performance and aesthetics are seamlessly integrated. High-traction surfaces are engineered to meet the demands of wet and high-traffic areas without compromising visual appeal. Inherent material properties, including resistance to moisture, UV exposure, fire and wear, support applications across residential, commercial and exterior settings. Combined with extended life cycles, these properties position ceramic tile as a reliable, long-term solution that aligns with a broader shift toward durability and thoughtful material selection.

A Sea of Calm

A sense of restraint and intentionality underpins many of the latest Spanish tile collections, reflecting a broader movement toward calm, restorative environments. Low-sheen finishes, softened contrasts and subtle detailing work together to create spaces that feel balanced and composed. Rather than relying on bold statements, luxury is expressed through material integrity, tactile richness and refined simplicity. This approach fosters interiors that prioritize well-being, offering a sense of refuge through cohesion, comfort and sensory depth.

Spanish ceramic tile manufacturers are expanding the role of surface materials in contemporary architecture and interiors. Through advanced production technologies, artisanal techniques and a commitment to long-term performance, Spain’s ceramic industry continues to redefine how tile shapes the built environment.

Tile of Spain, the international brand representing 100 ceramic tile manufacturers belonging to the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association (ASCER), presents the top macro trends influencing the future of architectural and interior design.

Furniture-Scale Applications

Ceramic tile is moving beyond traditional walls and floors into integrated, furniture-scale installations. Spanish manufacturers are transforming porcelain slabs into architectural furnishings, including clad kitchen islands, tiled sideboards, integrated bench seating and monolithic fireplace surrounds. Large-format porcelain panels paired with coordinated trim systems allow seamless wrapping of volumes, elevating functional elements into sculptural focal points. This approach broadens tile’s design vocabulary and positions ceramics as a defining component of spatial identity

Foundational Earth Palette

Color direction is grounding itself in mineral authenticity. New ceramic collections feature palettes inspired by single-pigment paints and historic artisanal dyes. Umbers, terracottas and chestnut browns anchor design schemes, while saffron ochres, verdigris turquoises, berry-toned reds and pistachio greens serve as accents. Softened whites and nuanced charcoals replace stark contrasts, acting as supporting elements. The result is a layered spectrum rooted in recognizable hues that harmonize across residential and commercial environments.

Analog Havens

As interiors prioritize slower and more intentional living, ceramics are helping define rooms dedicated to conversation, creativity and quiet connection. These analog-inspired spaces favor tactile finishes, artisan-influenced forms and layered lighting. Subway tile with fluted trims, terracotta, terrazzo and glazed brick reference eras defined by craftsmanship.

In addition to aesthetic appeal, ceramic’s nonconductive properties and compatibility with specialized mortars and membranes provide functional advantages in technology-light spaces. Integrated LED strip lighting within tile assemblies further enhances ambient illumination, supporting interiors that feel warm, grounded and intentionally unplugged.

Slow Design Durability

As designers move away from short-lived renovations, demand is increasing for materials built to last decades. Ceramic and porcelain tile, with life spans that can exceed 60 years, align naturally with this philosophy. Spanish-made ceramics resist UV exposure, fire, moisture, bacteria and everyday wear. Their inert composition supports long-term performance across residential, hospitality and commercial applications, positioning tile as a foundational investment rather than a temporary finish.

Material Honesty

A renewed appreciation for authenticity is guiding ceramic design toward its elemental origins. Rather than masking clay beneath high-gloss finishes, Spanish manufacturers are highlighting kiln-fired textures, mineral-based glazes and subtle surface variation. Collections emphasize visible edge detailing, tonal shifts and handcrafted aesthetics that communicate intention and craftsmanship. This direction reinforces ceramic as a time-honored material rooted in authenticity and lasting relevance.

Modern Heritage surfaces

Spanish manufacturers are blending historical motifs with advanced digital decoration to reinterpret antique tile aesthetics. Collections capture the patina, subtle wear and dimensional glaze effects associated with heritage craftsmanship while maintaining contemporary precision. These surfaces complement layered interiors that combine vintage furnishings, heirloom pieces and modern design. By merging centuries-old ceramic traditions with current manufacturing capabilities, Spanish producers reinforce tile’s role as both storyteller and connector within diverse spaces.

Coverings has released the top 10 tile trends for 2026. The newly announced trends offer a glimpse of the inspiring tile product displays that will be featured at Coverings 2026, scheduled to take place March 30 to April 2, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The tile trends were selected by Coverings’ three leading sponsors and international tile associations – Ceramics of Italy/Confindustria Ceramica, Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association of Spain (ASCER)/Tile of Spain and Tile Council of North America (TCNA) – to spotlight the most favored and chic product designs from the global tile industry.

Coverings spokesperson Alena Capra, CMKBD, owner of Alena Capra Designs, worked closely with the associations to identify this year’s trends.

“The trends highlight tile as both a creative medium and a high-performing design-build solution, pairing bold visual expression with the real-world demands of durability, hygiene and sustainability,” said Capra. “Above all, it is a celebration of the talented global tile industry driving the business forward — and the remarkable possibilities it provides.”

Capra, alongside a panel of industry experts, will discuss the annual tile trends at Coverings 2026 during the “Global Tile Trends” session, March 30 from 11 a.m. to noon PDT. The panel will dissect the freshest aesthetic, technological and sustainable innovations emerging from the world’s tile powerhouses, revealing the key looks that are defining contemporary design. Attendees will gain a sneak peek into the materials, designs and techniques that are shaping the tile industry in 2026.

Additional trends-related activations, education sessions, panels, presentations and live demonstrations will be available at Coverings 2026 for interior designers, architects, contractors, installers, fabricators, distributors, retailers and other tile and stone professionals. The program includes a variety of AIA–accredited courses on March 31. Attendees can learn more by visiting the full program schedule online.

The following 10 tile trends of 2026 are summarized in alphabetical order as follows:

1.) Articulated Accents: The Articulated Accents tile trend celebrates the synchronized harmony of graphic precision and outward design articulation, crafting tiles that engage the senses. Advanced glazing and contour-detailing techniques create surfaces that evoke the feel of anything from soft leather to textured sandstone, complete with stitching-like details or pitted striations. The result is a layered, immersive experience that responds dynamically to light and touch, bringing warmth, visual depth and subtle sophistication to interiors.

2.) Brutalish Sanctuary: Brutalish Sanctuary merges stripped-back materiality with refined restraint, reimagining Brutalist influence through concrete looks, terrazzo textures and matte stone looks. Celebrating material honesty, some tiles are left unglazed, allowing the material to speak for itself. Rejecting all-white predictability, this trend embraces authentic texture and inherent character, creating spaces that feel quiet, grounded and protective.

Brutalish Sanctuary: Crossville

3.) Gilded Age: Metallic details have resurfaced, becoming a quintessential design element among contemporary tile collections. These iridescent details transform ceramics from purely functional surfaces into sophisticated focal points. Gold, bronze, copper and silver ornamentation takes shape among both large- and small-format pieces, creating shimmering contrasts against matte, textured or neutral backgrounds. These accents are designed to interact with light, to emphasize architectural features and enhance spatial depth, all while adding quiet luxury to projects.

4.) Haptic Experience: Ceramic surfaces are evolving beyond visual appeal into interactive, multi-sensory experiences that respond and engage with the senses. Textures now range from subtle ridges and embossed patterns to deeply undulating surfaces, inviting touch and creating a human connection with materials. Advances in glazing chemistry and digital production add reactive qualities, allowing finishes to subtly shift with light, perspective or angle, lending to walls and floors with a dynamic almost living quality. These tiles not only enhance aesthetical range, but also elevate interiors to immersive, tactile environments.

5.) Jade Terrain: Inspired by the precious stone, this trend captures the serenity, sophistication and luxury of jade green as it translates into ceramic and porcelain tile. Jade green, positioned near the center of the green color family, showcases a wide array of hues in jade-inspired tiles, ranging from soft pastel greens and vibrant turquoises to deep, earth-toned mossy shades and saturated tones with subtle shadows of black. With product selections such as monochromatic subway tiles, two-toned mosaics, large-format tiles with shades of jade veining and much more, this trend offers designers and installers remarkable versatility and lends itself equally to calming interiors and bold architectural statements.

6.) Micro-Illusions: Small-format tiles have reached their mighty peak, achieving immense design effects by mimicking large-scale surfaces or intricate mosaics. Techniques such as precision scoring, digital printing and color-matched grout allow these tiles to replicate expansive mosaic murals, create optical illusions or produce layered dimensional effects. The result is high-impact design that is both cost-effective and installation-friendly, perfect for feature walls, accent areas and floors that demand detailed artistry without complexity.

7.) Organic Minimalism: Evolving to a cooler, more minimal aesthetic, this season manufacturers are emphasizing tranquility, texture and lasting stone effects. This trend represents a collective return to structured, quiet spaces, desaturated tones and the integrity of durable materials. This approach elevates raw elemental surfaces, such as concrete and ivory stone looks, into refined, tactile expressions of calm, sophisticated design.

Coverings 2026 Top 10 Tile Trends

Surface Technologies: Casalgrande Padana

8.) Surface Technologies: Manufacturers continue to pioneer new surface technologies, redefining the experience of space through touch, texture, light and function. Sculptural reliefs, bas-relief textures and glossy-matte contrasts create richly tactile walls, while advanced technologies add dimensional depth, slip resistance and silky touch-effects. From new integrated induction cooktops to engineered shower trays and backlit-effect surfaces, tile is redefining the relationship between material and technology.

9.) Tailored Craft: Function meets nostalgia in a way that is as playful as it is practical. Tailored Craft draws inspiration from fashion’s enduring motifs, blending tailored elegance with skilled craftsmanship. These looks imbue a quietly luxurious aesthetic that feels curated, tactile and timeless-perfect for designers who value character, and considered design over fleeting trends.

10.) Tile as Art: Tile is shifting from simple cladding to an immersive design statement, with manufacturers positioning it as a sophisticated alternative to wallpaper or art. This season’s collections introduce bold graphics, optical illusions and continuous murals that create decorative storytelling, ranging from geometric and metallic identities to refined scenographic patterns and hand-drawn, narrative-driven scenes.

Attendees will have the opportunity to discover in-person the top 10 tile trends and other global tile, stone and installation offerings at Coverings 2026, North America’s largest international tile and stone exposition and conference.

Fresh off a highly successful edition of Coverings 2025 in Orlando, Ceramics of Italy is unveiling its 2025 Spring-Summer Trend Report. Throughout 2025, Italian ceramic and porcelain tile design has continued to evolve with a bold yet thoughtful focus on emotion, materiality and craft.

New collections featuring a kaleidoscope of colors, nature-inspired palettes, artisanal details, timeless glamour and innovative surface applications were seen across the show floor – capturing a global shift toward calm, authenticity and connection. With a renewed appreciation for heritage and the handmade, tile is no longer just a surface choice; it’s a statement.

Advancements in technology are unlocking new sizes, formats and textures, brought to life in a cleaner, more conscious way that underscores the industry’s commitment to sustainable, high-performance design. Sculptural forms and finishes that play with light take center stage, while Art Deco styles make a bold comeback through expressive geometries. From full-surface cladding applications to human-centric design, this season’s top five trends spotlight the craftsmanship, collaborative connection and undeniable style from Italian tile manufacturers that continue to push the industry forward.

Kaleidoscope of Color

The warmer months are bringing a fresh burst of energy to tile design, and Ceramics of Italy member brands are embracing it with expressive palettes and captivating patterns. This season, there is no single dominant shade; instead, there’s a kaleidoscope of earthy neutrals that offer a sense of stability and balance, along with soft pastels, bold, whimsical hues and nature-inspired tones.

From the sun-soaked warmth of terracotta red as seen in Casalgrande Padana’s Concept to electric and Mediterranean blues like those of Appiani’s Coriandoli and Ceramica Bardelli’s Sinfonia, colors are being used to evoke emotion and transform spaces.

2025 Spring-Summer Trend Report from Ceramics of Italy

Ceramica Bardelli Sinfonia

New color-centric collections like Forever Color by CIR Ceramiche, Colovers by Supergres and Palette by Flaviker play with muted yellows, dusty pinks and grays, expressed through decorative patterns and textures. Greens are also flourishing, with Tagina’s Onyx Diamond and Avastone’s Green Sky exploring sage and emerald shades that mirror nature’s vitality.

Meanwhile, the “color drenching” trend continues to gain traction, enveloping rooms in saturated or more muted tones like in La Faenza’s Cocoon from floor to ceiling for a striking, cohesive look. Whether it’s the rhythmic vibrancy of Marca Corona’s Miniature Rima or calming hues that offer a delicate touch, the latest collections invite a sense of escapism and deeper connection to nature.

Anthroform

A new wave in tile design is reimagining human culture and connection through a thoughtful blend of craftsmanship, material heritage and storytelling. Italian brands are at the forefront, collaborating with renowned designers like Paola Navone, Simone Bonanni, Claudia Carpenito, AMDL Circle, Letizia Ballotti and Elisa Ossino to infuse contemporary surfaces with a poetic, human-centric sensibility.

Others are deepening ties to the land by partnering with celebrated natural material suppliers, such as in Log by Atlas Concorde and Italian wood provider Itlas, and in Oltrenero by Mirage and Mount Etna lava stone supplier Nerosicilia – channeling decades of expertise into hyper-realistic ceramic renditions of natural materials.

2025 Spring-Summer Trend Report from Ceramics of Italy

Leonardo Ceramica Motif

Italian manufacturers are also looking outward, to architecture, heritage and the spaces where cultures meet. References range from the vibrant dwellings of Indonesia’s Kampung village in Tonalite’s Kampung to the refined stone of Italian palazzos in Serenissima’s Palazzo. Inspiration from materials like ancient Occitan limestone in Cercom’s Stone Vision speaks to the architectural languages born at the crossroads of civilizations. Symbolic patterns, inspired by the shared visual language of civilizations like the Messapia in Settecento’s Koinè, bring ancient motifs into contemporary focus.

Collections like Naxos’s Cythere and Ragno’s Look revisit the Mediterranean ceramic tradition with hand-forged square and brick aesthetics and 19th-century tile patterns, while Del Conca’s Bioterre evokes rammed earth construction – an age-old building method intrinsic to regional identity. Manufacturers, like Terratinta, embrace extruded forms that honor artisanal terracotta latticework, and Leonardo’s Motif and Decoratori Bassanesi’s Kimono channel the textures and patterns of antique textiles. Together, these designs form a rich anthology — one that reinterprets cultural memory and material legacy through a distinctly modern lens.

Art Deco

Art Deco is making a bold comeback in tile, where timeless glamour meets sharp geometry. Today’s designs reimagine classic motifs like chevrons in Ceramiche Refin’s Reliefs, arches in Tagina’s Marmi Imperiali, circles in Gardenia Orchidea’s I Pigmenti, and squares in Unicomstarker’s Marmorea and Verde 1999’s Checkerboard, showcasing dramatic arrangements.

Verde Checkerboard

True to traditional Deco style, many of these collections thrive on high contrast – dark, moody tones set against lighter hues in eye-catching matte and glossy surfaces for maximum impact, such as La Fenice’s Majestic and Elios Ceramica’s Glow. Monochromatic palettes, such as in Pastorelli’s Primitive, rich jewel tones, like in Versace Ceramics’ Tarsia, and earthy hues, such as in Casalgrande Padana’s Terrae, capture the essence of a golden era while embracing contemporary, cutting-edge design. The result is a striking revival that channels Art Deco’s opulence through a modern lens that is bold, elegant, and unmistakably current.

Lightscape

Tile is no longer just a surface – it’s a canvas for light. Today’s most compelling designs are embracing light, not just in how it is illuminated, but in how it reflects, refracts and plays with it. Italian manufacturers are leading this trend, pushing boundaries with tile finishes, formats and technologies that transform the way spaces glow and shimmer.

Large-format porcelain slabs in onyx, marble and stone effects now mimic the depth and glow of backlighting, thanks to advanced digital and layering techniques, as seen in Emilceramica’s Tele di Marmo Lumia and Ceramica Fondovalle’s MyTop. The result is a luminous, almost translucent, surface that feels both modern and luxurious.

Imola Ceramica Vanity

Adding to this dialogue between form and illumination, lattice-style tiles like those in Mirage’s Terrae and Marca Corona’s Arialuce are emerging as sculptural elements in their own right. Installed as room dividers or exterior walls, they cast ever-changing shadows and light patterns that animate a space.

Meanwhile, the combination of matte and glossy finishes in Faetano’s Manufatti and ABK’s Poetry Stone Reloaded, strategically placed to catch and refract light, creates movement across walls and floors. Brands like Imola Ceramica and Keradom are also exploring light interaction through innovative production and finishing techniques that reproduce marble’s shimmering crystallization or add a glittering layer to surfaces, while CIR Ceramiche’s Showall collection beautifully recreates the charm of antiqued mirror effects for a distinctive vintage allure. These details, paired with the playful colors and patterns that are also on the rise, not only add personality but make interiors feel brighter, more joyful, and full of life.

Surface Cladding

Tile is no longer confined to floors and walls. With its versatility, durability and ability to mimic natural materials like marble and wood, tile is being applied everywhere, transforming into a multifunctional design element that extends into spaces in new, unexpected ways.

Italian manufacturers are redefining tile as a statement surface – from countertops and cooktops, as seen in Coem’s Immensa collection, to porcelain tables and tile-wrapped islands, from large slab brands like Materia. Communal areas – from dining rooms and living spaces to offices and hospitality lounges – are emerging as showpieces for tile design, incorporating everything from dramatic fireplace surrounds to striking gathering tables and workstations.

In the bathroom, prefabricated vanities and washbasins are taking center stage, as seen in La Geoteca by Gardenia Orchidea. Collections such as Emilgroup’s Ergon Materastone and FAP Ceramiche’s Still take surface cladding even further, wrapping walls, bars and appliances for a total-room look.

LaFabbrica Kist Beige Outdoor

Outside, tile is making a bold impact with innovative applications like Ceramiche Caesar’s Civic series, which clads kitchen and bar areas in sleek porcelain finishes, while small, brick tiles like those in La Fabbrica’s Kist series alongside large-format porcelain panels from Cotto d’Este’s Arketipo line are increasingly being specified for outdoor wall cladding and building facades.

As tile evolves beyond traditional applications — from furniture to architectural features — it redefined surfaces with versatility and style, becoming a central element in design.

Emser Tile, leading designer and producer of the world’s finest tile and natural stone, has released its 2024 Trend Report that includes eight trends that designers will be focusing on, in the year ahead.

“Interior design plays a pivotal role in shaping one’s mood and establishing the ambiance of a space, and these 2024 trends reflect this. For instance, warm neutrals and browns can evoke feelings of coziness and comfort, while cool blues and sage greens may promote relaxation and calmness,” says Suzanne Zurfluh, Director of Design and Trend at Emser Tile. “Whether it’s a vibrant and energetic atmosphere or a tranquil and peaceful retreat, interior design has the power to set the tone and enhance the overall well-being of its occupants.” The eight trends identified are:

Artisan Charm celebrates the look of handcrafted, artisanal pieces that hold emotional value, a sentiment amplified by the knowledge that each item is a labor of love from a skilled artisan. The individuality of these creations, complete with their flawlessly imperfect attributes, imparts a comforting and intimate ambiance.

Quiet Luxury fits in the realms of both fashion and interior design, where there’s a notable lean towards a subdued yet sophisticated form of elegance. Emphasis on refined simplicity and enduring charm, within interior spaces this aesthetic has a serene ambiance. Key characteristics include a minimalist and carefully curated visual style, and premium materials such as marble and large-format natural stone, which evoke the ambiance of a lavish spa or boutique hotel.

The Nature Escape acknowledges the influence of nature on design and our inherent bond with the outdoors. Characterized by rustic materials like wood, stone, pebbles, and natural fibers, as well as the incorporation of curved shapes, floral patterns, and fluted accents, this trend embraces hues inspired by the natural world, cultivating a serene and welcoming atmosphere.

Texture Takeover includes the looks of rugged stone, metal, wood texture, as well as matte and glossy finishes, which all persist in tile aesthetics and interior design. These designs not only introduce depth but also contribute to a multi-sensory experience, resulting in a harmonious and inviting visual appeal.

Pattern Play includes lively geometric shapes, artistic motifs, and energetic color palettes that make a striking statement, particularly through tile arrangements. Expect to encounter a diverse array of tile types that when together form captivating designs.

Bold & Beautiful builds on the rising trend of “Dopamine Décor,” where interiors are crafted to elicit feelings of joy. There’s a growing acceptance of integrating vivid, saturated colors into living spaces. Vibrant hues of blue, green, red, orange, and yellow take center stage in this aesthetic, with the intent to inject vitality and dynamism into a space.

Dark & Moody sees the incorporation of deep, dark tones in interior design, which evokes a sense of grandeur and intrigue. Over time, this style has evolved to become more adaptable, seamlessly integrating into contemporary interiors and blending with various colors and elements to create visually stunning spaces. Subtly tinted and deeply saturated hues such as midnight blue, black, dark green, and burgundy radiate sophistication and refinement, cultivating a cozy and intimate mood.

Warm & Welcoming draws inspiration from the natural world and uses a color palette that infuses warmth and comfort into spaces. Earthy hues can evoke a sense of nostalgia within modern interiors, blending vintage charm with contemporary aesthetics to cultivate a relaxed and inviting ambiance.

Coverings, North America’s largest and premier international tile and stone exhibition and conference, has unveiled the top tile trends for 2024 in celebration of National Tile Day.

The release of the trendsetting tile styles commemorates National Tile Day, Feb. 23, 2024, and the timeless role ceramic tile plays in architecture, design and installation around the world. The official industry holiday shines an important spotlight on the sustainability, durability and beauty – among many other benefits – of ceramic tile in residential, commercial, hospitality, industrial, indoor and outdoor design.

This year’s lineup of in-vogue tile trends was identified by Coverings’ three leading sponsors and international tile associations – Ceramics of Italy/Confindustria Ceramica, Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association of Spain (ASCER)/Tile of Spain and Tile Council of North America (TCNA) – to showcase the most in-demand and fashionable tile designs from the global tile market.

Alena Capra, owner of Alena Capra Designs, Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer and Coverings spokesperson, collaborated with the tile associations to forecast the 2024 tile trends.

“The Coverings 2024 tile trends deliver a totally fresh perspective on ceramic tile’s versatility and beauty, providing architects, designers and other tile professionals with a groundbreaking reimagination of tile’s unified functional and aesthetic possibilities,” said Capra. “National Tile Day, however, is not just about getting a first look at the cutting-edge trends shaping design; it is also about uniting industry professionals from around the world for a collective tribute to the timeless artistry and long-enduring benefits that ceramic tile brings to our creative endeavors.”

Capra and a panel of tile industry insiders will showcase and discuss the diverse range of this year’s tile trends at Coverings 2024 during the “Global Tile Trends” presentation, which will take place April 22, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. EDT. The live session will provide attendees with a detailed exploration of the newest tile trends with stunning photography from an expansive range of indoor and outdoor tile applications.

Registration and attendance for Coverings 2024 are complimentary, offering attendees a cost-free opportunity to explore the latest and most popular global tile and stone products in one place. Showgoers can also take advantage of four valuable days rife with curated show floor tours, educational sessions, live demonstrations, activations, and international pavilions to stay abreast of crucial industry insights.

The following 10 tile trends of 2024 are summarized in alphabetical order:

Architectonic: With tile being a historically integral part of buildings, it is no surprise that architecture is a muse for tile manufacturers. Ceramic brands are partnering with industry designer heavyweights to put their own creative stamps on the classic material, while others are inspired by historic buildings and architectural details, from stained glass to Byzantine cut mosaics. Beyond Realism: When texture, sheen and reflectivity with color can be digitally manipulated, it is not only possible to recreate anything through ceramics, it is also easy. Modern tile production is at a stage where artistic expression knows no bounds, even when taking on a natural reproduction. The layers of detail that are possible with printing techniques evokes truly visceral experiences. The ability to create fine variances in decorative adornments allows for a ceramicist to play with the characteristics of different substances or introduce other elements of interest in tile. Contempo Concrete: To complement the raw beauty of contemporary architecture, designers are giving us fresh interpretations of modern cement in porcelain format. Exquisitely colored and perfectly sized aggregates give these designs a handcrafted concrete look and feel. Beautifully brutalist and understatedly elegant, these creative concrete looks embody modernity, sophistication and the bustling tapestry of urban living. Photo credit: Stonepeak Ceramics

Organic Grandeur: Innovative glazing technology paired with inspiration from rare natural materials give us surfaces so stunning, you’ll lose your gaze in them. Enhancing effects of light and reflectivity are reproduced in luminous finishes, giving the beauty and depth of marble with the durability of porcelain in color ranges wider than those of natural stone. Porcelain Panels Panache: The world is witnessing and embracing the availability of production-ready versions of full-body porcelain panels. This achievement signifies a momentous milestone as it fulfills a longstanding request from fabricators and specifiers since the mainstream adoption and installation of large-format tiles. These full-body pieces offer the remarkable qualities of heat, stain and scratch resistance, while being sustainable and free from toxic chemicals. What’s more, manufacturers are turning up the volume on this trend with the look, style and allure of natural stone, spanning many collections mimicking the world’s rarest marble and showcasing evocative amalgamations with bright colors and luminous veins. Distinguishing them from vying materials is their capacity to be worked with, using traditional fabrication techniques, making them a cost-effective and versatile choice for exceptional architecture and design applications. Seeking Balance: When balance and complementary interactions are fleeting, tile makers look to the birthplace of yin-yang and wabi-sabi for inspiration. While we see ample textile designs translated into ceramic renditions, there is one standout repeated by many this year, “stick mosaics.” Manufacturers are offering their take on this classic Japanese porcelain style, enhancing new lines with gracefully flowing pottery glazes. The appeal of fragmented pieces lies in the delicate interplay between precise straight lines and a gracefully undulating imperfect charm of the coatings. Photo credit: Wow Design

Set in Stone: These looks draw inspiration from the magnificent beauty of the Earth’s ancient geological past. Masterpieces of nature, like limestone, bluestone and slate, are represented with such precision and include characteristics like veining, coal lines and visible fossils. The visual richness of their textures, nuances and details are maintained and paired with the practicality of ceramic. Photo credit: Portobello America Inc.

Tactile Renaissance: Tile manufacturers are wholeheartedly embracing the infusion of rich textures throughout new ceramic collections. As architects and designers explore a growing interest in outfitting built environments in raw and rugged materials, the incorporation of tangible surfaces enables one to adequately interact with and navigate a space. Tiles impressed with deep grooves, subtle fluting, billowing curves and scored strokes are meant to be experienced both visually and physically. Photo credit: Porcelanite Dos

The Third Dimension: Ceramic tile companies are looking to the third dimension as the next frontier of design. New collections feature a plethora of 3D tiles from fluted and protruding surfaces to reliefs with explosive patterns. As manufacturers work toward producing tiles that look and feel like natural stone, marble prints are now paired with low relief veining for an incredibly realistic appearance. Trompe L’oeil: From misty forests to overlapping sheets of corrugated metal, tile manufacturers are producing a range of mind-blowing optical illusion effects on porcelain. Given the technical benefits of porcelain, designers can use these digitally printed tiles to their advantage, creating a shower that appears to be enclosed by billowy drapes or the floors of a spa covered in grooved wood-look planks. The top 10 ceramic tile trends, and many others, will be on display throughout Coverings 2024, offering attendees the opportunity to experience North America’s largest international tile and stone exposition and conference.

Tile is having a moment, according to Feras Irikat, design and marketing director for Lunada Bay Tile, the California-based company offering Japanese-inspired tiles, including many made with recycled glass.

And why shouldn’t it? Tile has been an integral element in design for thousands of years in most parts of the world, coveted for its beauty and durability and as a material for artisans to create interior works of art. Today, we are reaping the rewards of tile’s rich legacy.

“Tile is like jewelry for your home,” said Irikat. “An expanded range of colors, textures, patterns — and prices — plus the ability to complement any décor, have made tile appropriate for areas anywhere in the home, both inside and outside. Interesting formats, colors and materials allow for true customization.”

Irikat has noted, tile trends for 2023 and beyond:

  • Mix & Match. No longer is matching finishes throughout the space the rule of design. The more you mix, the more unique and personalized your space will be. Wood, stone and ceramics can work together to achieve a truly bespoke design — a space that is simple and sophisticated yet highly personalized. And there’s no better area to add texture than the kitchen backsplash. Here, you can use glass, mirror, ceramic, granite or any surface with ease. Even if you want to go all out and try a tile mosaic, the backsplash is the perfect place to do it.

  • Personalization is the New Luxury. A little imagination can go a long way. Metallics can add warmth to an interior. Copper, bronze and gold are trending for décor finishes, and this trend can be complemented in tile. Shimmery, light and reflective, touches of metals can spice up  design. For example, Momentum from Lunada Bay Tile is a three-dimensional ceramic tile collection with metallic hues that can be customized into exclusive wall art for residential or commercial spaces. A special hand-sculpting technique makes this one-of-a-kind wall art possible. The tiles can be arranged in a wide range of stylistic possibilities for the ultimate in personal expression.

  • Color Dominates. Nature-inspired colors are more than greens, blues or calming neutrals. They are colors that reignite our passion to nature — what is surprising and unique and wow out there, including vibrant reds. One bright red tile, Marrakesh Red from Lunada Bay Tile’s Tozen collection, conveys a movement of color, contrast and light juxtaposed on a perfect canvas of translucent, handcrafted glass mosaics.

“One of the most gorgeous red colors is a deep rich red that actually does come from nature – from a small insect, white and fluffy, which lives on the paddles of the prickly pear cactus and when crushed, produces an extraordinary red dye,” said Irikat. “ This bug is the cochineal. Cochineal red is the brightest color found in nature and emits power and presence.”

Hot Tile Trends Lunada Bay Tile

  • Softer Home Aesthetics. A soft home or soft sanctuary can ease our minds, offering an escape from a chaotic world where connection is possible. From high chromatic colors to neutrals, they are all getting a softer makeover. It is a chaotic world and creating a  soft sanctuary at home is more important than ever.

“We want to go home not to four walls, but to a sanctuary: soft colors, soft surfaces,” said Irikat. “We interact with our environment in a more emotional way than an aesthetic way.”

  • Biophilic Design. This has been huge for the past couple of years, and it is not set to go out of style anytime soon. People want to react with their environment more than in the past. It is nature as designer. Biophilic design seeks to connect a home’s occupants more closely to nature by incorporating things like natural lighting and ventilation, natural landscape features and other elements for creating a more productive and healthier built environment for people. People desire natural and organic textures for added interest and design value.

“Transitioning, transforming and transmitting — that’s tile,” said Irikat. “More than ever people are looking for personal artistic expression in their homes and everyday life, and tile design can help achieve this balance.”
